Should you opt for a single page site?

 

The beauty of a website is that it can take on nearly any size. I’ve designed and built websites with 200 pages, 5 pages and of course single page sites. Each served their own purpose.

 

The single page site is (you guessed it) a one-page site, that’s generally longer than most pages. It’s sectioned off, and instead of the navigation links bringing you to pages, they bring you scrolling down to a section of the page (hence the scrolling part).

 

These sections can be what would normally have it’s own page – about, contact, etc. Of course, they have far less content than a regular page might.

 

This format is feeling the love right now, and it’s bound to be a big trend in 2019. One question I get asked a lot is, is it a good idea?

 

How do you know if this is the right option for you? Let’s take a look at the pros and cons.

 

Pros

Affordability

Because of its size, these sites are less expensive than your average 5 pager. If your budget is a concern, this might be a better option for you.

 

Short and sweet

A goldfish’s attention span: 9 seconds. A human’s attention span today: 6-8 seconds. Yep, we officially have shorter attention spans than goldfish. When you consider this, it makes sense that a single scrolling page might have more impact than a 5 page site, depending on the message you’re trying to get across.

 

Cons

Less searchable

Because a single-page scrolling site inherently has less content, that means there are less keywords for search engines to crawl. There are also less pages to be indexed by Google. This means

 

Crammed content

Now, this isn’t always the case. But if you have a ton of content, or think that you might, don’t try to cram it all into one page. The last thing anyone wants is a super long page that never ends to scroll though. When you try to smush a bunch of content together, people can tell.

 

Of course, there’s more to it.

I’ve shared some of the pros and cons with you, but every business is different. The option that is best for you depends on your industry, your size, and the purpose of your website.

 

When you absolutely should opt for a multi-page site

  • You are positioning yourself as an educator and providing resources
  • You’re highly concerned about search
  • You’re selling products on your website’
