Building an email list is one of the best ways to build relationships with your potential customers. Here’s why you will absolutely need one in 2021.

What is an email list?

An email list is simply a list of emails you’ve collected from forms on your website for marketing purposes. This list is used to send promotional emails and helpful information to your prospective clients. Your email list typically lives on your email marketing tool, for example Mailchimp, Constant Contact or Omnisend. There are many other email marketing tools.

Email is not sleazy.

Time and time again, I will work with a new client and they will be so hesitant to do any email marketing. “I just don’t want to bother people” is something I hear a LOT, and I get it! But guess what? Your recipients voluntarily subscribed to your list because they want to hear from you. Once we give it a shot and you see the dollar signs in that revenue section in the report, you’ll see that email is an amazing tool for converting leads. And it’s possible to do it tastefully, without irritating your customers.

Email is personal.

With an email list, there’s a level of personalization that just isn’t possible using other marketing approaches. When they see your message in their inbox, they’ll know it’s for them. It isn’t just a post they are scrolling past. Also, you can try personalizing your email with your recipient’s name to boost revenue.

Your users will return again and again.

Did you know that on average, 70% of people that leave your website never return? If you want returning users and repeat customers (you do), email is the way to go. You have the opportunity to invite them back to your website with a new blog post, product launch or promotion.

Your email list is yours.

What would happen if Instagram shut down tomorrow? You would lose all of your followers. All of those people who were interested in your offering, just gone. You don’t own your Instagram following. With email on the other hand, you own that list. It’s not going anywhere. This allows for more control of your audience.

Make more money.

Remember how I mentioned that revenue section in email reports? There’s a reason email marketing is popular – it works. The average ROI on email marketing is over 4000% – meaning dedicating some of your budget to emails is absolutely worth the investment.

Ethical list-building

Did you know you can buy email lists? Please, don’t do this. There are many reasons not to, but the most important one is that it is illegal. You should only be sending marketing emails to people who have actually consented to receiving emails from you. Plus, if your contacts didn’t sign up for your list themselves, then it means they probably aren’t interested in your offering.Your emails will likely be marked as spam. Build an honest list – 50 interested prospects is better than 5000 uninterested people who didn’t consent to hearing from you in the first place.

Ready to start building your email list? Start by choosing an email marketing platform. I personally love Omnisend (especially for Shopify sites!) and Mailchimp. Once you’ve created your accounts, you can start collecting emails using their forms on your website.
